On power-laws in SDH transport networks

چکیده
It is has been previously demonstrated [4] that Internet topologies which were once considered unstructured networks with no global design processes actually follow powerlaws, both at the router level and the AS (Autonomous System) domain level. This discovery has very wide implications on network research as well as network and protocol design. The Internet is not the only network instance to exhibit power laws however; in this paper we present evidence for similar power laws also existing in transport layer topologies; in this case a real world deployed SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) network. The existence of such traits is unexpected as transport technologies are planned and engineered, in contrast to the rather looser planning and dynamic routing of the Internet. SDH networks are globally designed with multiple hierarchical levels and a specific structure, whereas the Internet is a growing collection of networks under independent control. Data is presented to demonstrate the conformance to power laws of the SDH network, the possible effects of the physical layer and the extent to which the topology remains scale-free throughout the network’s hierarchy. The possible sources of the traits are discussed and contrasted to those hypothesized for the Internet.

PLC and SONET/SDH Networks Bridging with Ethernet
Power Line communications (PLC) provides “Broadband Ethernet” connectivity directly to the customer’s socket in home without additional cabling. However, PLC networks do not provide global end-to-end connectivity and need to rely on incumbent’s telecom networks. In order to lower the cost of CAPEX and OPEX the network interconnection is done at “Ethernet” level. Most of Incumbent’s networks are...
متن کاملOn the topology of optical transport networks
Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) is the standard technology for information transmission in broadband optical networks. Unlike systems with unplanned growth, such as those of natural origin or the Internet network, the SDH systems are strictly planned as rings, meshes, stars or tree-branches structures designed to connect different equipments. In spite of that, we have found that the SDH net...
متن کاملDimensioning of SDH/WDM Multilayer Networks
Integration of SDH and WDM network technology in dynamic multilayer networks is considered one promising option for migrating from rather static SDH networks to the automatically switched transport network (ASTN) with a dynamic photonic layer. This paper investigates dimensioning of SDH/WDM multilayer networks. Two different approaches for dimensioning network links and nodes are compared for d...
متن کاملDimensioning and Performance Analysis of NG-SDH Networks for IP Traffic Support
To enable the transference of a large amount of data over long distances, it is required to use infra-structures denominated transport networks. This work is about NextGeneration Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (NG-SDH) transport networks, which result from the convergence between SDH networks and Ethernet networks. The changes introduced into the legacy SDH are studied, and a set of heuristic al...
متن کاملNetwork Working Group Framework for Generalized Multi-protocol Label Switching (gmpls)-based Control of Synchronous Digital Hierarchy/synchronous Optical Networking (sdh/sonet) Networks
Generalized Multi-Protocol Label Switching (GMPLS) is a suite of protocol extensions to MPLS to make it generally applicable, to include, for example, control of non packet-based switching, and particularly, optical switching. One consideration is to use GMPLS protocols to upgrade the control plane of optical transport networks. This document illustrates this process by describing those extensi...
